Question 29 request help Identify Repeated Reasoning The diagram at the right is made up of circles with the same center. In geometry and mathematics, the word circumference is used to describe the measurement of the distance around a circle while radius is used to describe the distance across a circle's length.

In the following eight circumference worksheets, students are provided with the radius of each of the circles listed and asked to find the area and circumference in inches. Fortunately, each of these printable PDFs of circumference worksheets comes with a second page that has the answers to all of these questions so that students may check the validity of their work—however, it's important for teachers to make sure they don't give the sheet with answers out initially!

In order to calculate circumferences, students should be reminded of the formulas mathematicians use to measure the distance around a circle when the length of the radius is known: the circumference of a circle is two times the radius multiplied by Pi, or 3.

Use both of these equations to solve the questions on the following eight worksheets. In the common core standards for evaluating mathematics education in students, the following skill is required: Know the formulas for the area and circumference of a circle and use them to solve problems and give an informal derivation of the relationship between the circumference and area of a circle.

In order for students to complete these worksheets, they will need to understand the following vocabulary: area, formula, circle, perimeter, radius, pi and the symbol for pi, and diameter. Students should have worked with simple formulas on perimeter and area of other 2 dimensional shapes and had some experience finding the perimeter of a circle by doing activities like using string to trace the circle and then measuring the string to determine the perimeter of the circle.

There are many calculators that will find the circumference and areas of shapes but it is important for students to be able to understand the concepts and apply the formulas before moving to the calculator. Some teachers require students to memorize formulas, but students do not need to memorize all the formulas.

Pixel art 3d gameHowever, we think it's important to remember the value of the constant Pi at 3. Even though Pi technically represents an infinite number that starts with 3. In any case, students should be able to understand and apply the formulas to a few questions before using a basic calculator.

However, basic calculators should be used once the concept is understood to eliminate the potential for calculation errors. Curriculum varies from state to state, country to country and although this concept is required in the seventh grade in the Common Core Standards, it is wise to check the curriculum to determine what grade these worksheets are suitable for. ## Exploring Circumference

Deb Russell. Math Expert. Deb Russell is a school principal and teacher with over 25 years of experience teaching mathematics at all levels. Updated February 14, The opener is a mixture of previously learned questions, and students should work individually, and then as table groups to discuss the methods for solving the questions.

During this time I will assist those students who were absent the previous day, and any other students needing help. After approximately 5 minutes, I will call on students to go to the board and solve the opener questions. By having a student explain their reasoning while others listen and provide feedback, mathematical practice 3 — construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others — becomes a natural part of class.

Instructional Strategy - Process for openers. I will play the song while I get the notes passed out. I will work a few problems out with the kids, and then set the off to complete the remaining problems on their own. I am curious to see how kids do with the bicycle question - I have found in the past that many students struggle to realize this is a circumference question. Instructional Strategy - How do table challenges work? The purpose of this activity will be to make sure that students understand when it would be appropriate to calculate area, versus circumference.

Normally, lots of hands go up for this question — which is always a good sign!

Here, I want students to spend a couple minutes jotting down what they know and want to know about circles. I ask students to share their knowledge and ideas with the class. I pause the video so that students can fill in their notes. I do not show the entire video! Students will be deriving the circumference formula later in the lesson, so I stop the video at after Tim shares that the circumference is the perimeter of a circle, or the distance around it.

Now that students have been exposed to the definitions of radius and diameter, I want them to practice knowing one and finding the other. A common mistake is that students confuse diameter with radius and vice versa. It helps students to draw what is given first, and then figure out the missing information. I have a volunteer read the directions. I go over group expectations and what to do when they finish measuring an item. I stress the importance of accurately measuring the items.

For this activity, I let the students choose their groups of I give them 30 seconds to pick their groups and sit down. If they cannot handle that, then I will have students count off and sit down. While students are working, I walk around and monitor student progress and behavior.

When a group has measured five objects, I check in with them briefly and then have them move on to the graph. Some students may struggle to make connections on question 3. This is okay. I want students to work together to see what they can figure out. If a group asks for a calculator, I give them one to work with. If a group completes the graph and questions, I ask them to explain what they noticed and their predictions for 3c and 3d.

If there is still time, the group can measure extra items and then plot the new measurements on the graph. With about seven minutes left, I stop groups and have them come together for a class discussion. I ask volunteers from different groups to show their graphs under the document camera.

I ask students to share their predictions to 3c and 3d and explain them.

### CHEAT SHEET

Students will be deriving the circumference formula next, so I stop the video at after Tim shares that pi is an irrational number. We go through these questions together as a class.

Students are engaging in MP 8: Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Then I have students use their formula to answer 1 and 2. For 1a, students can just put 8 times pi. Rather than using 3. If I have extra time, I give students problems with bigger circumference of cm and smaller diameter of 2.

The section of a large geometry playlist discusses the two formulas for finding the circumference of a circle.

With the aid of the formulas, the presenter demonstrates finding the distance around circles in With a ruler and a piece of string, geometers measure the circumference of a circular object.

Tracing and folding it, they find the diameter of the resulting circle so that they can relate it to the circumference. It is recommended that For Students 6th - 9th Standards. Solving for circumference is an easy as one, two, pi! Show your learners what pi is and how to use it in an equation.
